note2email.com - Write anonymous emails

So, you need (or want) to send an email to someone without them knowing who it's from. I don't want to get into why you might want to do that. That's between you and them. Here's a simple way to do it...use note2email.com. (The web site describes the purpose of the application thus: "Note2email is a web application designed to send quick text notes to any email address in the world." So it's not really designed for sending anonymous emails, but it can be used for that purpose.)

Yahoo Zimbra - A reason to look at Yahoo again

Have you ever become disenchanted with your email client? This happened to me recently, which prompted me to begin a new search for a replacement. Lo and behold, look what dropped serendipitously into my lap.

Yahoo bought Zimbra and now brings us the free Zimbra email client. I was able to set it up with no problems on a couple of different machines, and so far I like it a lot. Here's what the web site says:
A better inbox
Advanced web technology adds Conversation Views and Message Tags to automatically highlight important emails in all your email accounts. The visual Search Builder makes it easy to quickly find important pictures, documents or messages from people you care about.
All your accounts in one place
Zimbra Mail, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL, Outlook or any other work or personal email account using POP or IMAP is easy to set up in Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop. The best part—you can read them offline without an internet connection.
Be more productive
Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop also manages your Contacts and has a Calendar, Document editor, Task list and Briefcase for storing all your attachments.

Gmail Adds IMAP

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

As everyone knows (or perhaps not), IMAP is the best way to access your email from multiple devices (home, work, mobile, etc.) because the information is always synchronized. Any changes you make take place on the server, not on your device. From the web site:

As we roll out the feature over the next couple of days, you will be able to use Gmail at work, in your car, or just about anywhere on any device, and actions you take will be automatically synced with Gmail on the web (and remember it works the other way too: anything you do on the Web will be seen on your phone or in your mail client). Just click the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab in your Gmail "Settings" and turn it on. (Psst. If you don't see the "IMAP" in the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab, then check back soon. We are giving it to users as fast as we can).

Gmail Expands

Have you noticed that your Gmail storage capacity has recently been growing much faster than usual? If so, you are quite observant, and I commend you. I noticed the phenomenon yesterday. Suddenly I had gone from inchworm-slow growth that was hardly noticeable, to a jump of 4oMb seemingly overnight. Something big was going on.

Google has announced, or leaked, the fact that it is rapidly expanding your Gmail capacity to a nice, fat 6Gb by January 2008. On October 23 you will have 4321Mb, and by January 4 you will arrive at 6283Mb. What will you do with all that storage? I'm sure you'll think of something.

Read more about this here.

Webmail, Plain and Simple: Litepost

Litepost Webmail

If you feel a bit overwhelmed with web mail offerings these days, you probably have company. All the bells and whistles are dandy, if you want them and need them. But what if you happen to want a simple, clean interface? Today is your lucky day, my friend, because I am going to introduce you to the web mail you desire: Litepost.

From their welcome email:

We're Different:
Until now, the webmail experience has been a stale and confusing experience. Instead of finding new ways to help you communicate better, other services just add more features, often at the expense of usability. Fortunately, we've rethought webmail, focusing on one thing: sending and receiving messages (imagine that). No more, no less. (If you really want to subscribe to RSS feeds from within your inbox, we hear the new Yahoo! Mail beta has it.)

Clutter-Free Design:
Instead of burying the user in features they'll never use, the Litepost webmail experience is simple and straightforward. Nothing in the interface is out of place, nor is any detail too small. Using webmail is suddenly a quick and intuitive workflow, rather than a chore. Browse, sort, read, manage, and send with ease.

Everything Is Free:
Just like most other services, Litepost offers free hosted email accounts. But we've taken the definition of free to another level. We've made the Litepost webmail server an open source download, so you can install the solution on your own server, without relying on another company to store your messages.

One Size Doesn't Fit All:
Out of the box, we think the default Litepost webmail interface will work great for most people. However, if a user has different preferences or needs, we happily support change. Interface templates allow you to totally change your webmail experience, both aesthetically and functionally. Find one that suits you or design your own.
Litepost has quietly opened its registration to all comers.

Size Wars: Hotmail Grows Standard Storage to 5Gb

Windows Live Hotmail

Can you remember when Hotmail gave you 10Mb storage for your email? I may be misremembering, but I think that was it. My how things have changed. First Google touted its massive email storage, now up to 2.888Gb. Much later, Yahoo went unlimited. Now Hotmail has enlarged itself to 5Gb for standard users. Mama mia!

Of course, like any sensible person, I have all of these email services and more. Do I need them? Of course not. Need has nothing to do with it. So why do I have them? I have no idea. I guess it's because I can.

So if you haven't used Hotmail in a while, you might want to rethink your decision to abandon it. It has a nice new interface and more storage than the next guy.

Send Self-Destructing Email: BigString

BigString

If you are a little-brain, you regularly send emails that you would never want splashed on the front page of your newspaper or could be, and perhaps have been, used against you in court. If you are smart, you never use email for sensitive communications. If you are brilliant, you use self-destructing email.

Scenario: You want to send someone an email but are a bit concerned about the possibility of its contents being copied, forwarded, or somehow coming back to take a chunk out of your behind. What do you do? Here's a neat solution: BigString. BigString is all about "ending sender regret."

With BigString you get (for free, mind you) email service that includes these features:

  • Self-Destructing
  • 2 GB of Storage
  • Recallable/erasable email
  • Video Emails
  • Non-Forwardable/IP Locking
  • Large Attachment Capacity
  • Non-Printable/savable emails
  • Automatic Message Highlighting
  • Advanced Email Tracking
  • Advanced Spam and Virus Filtering
  • Masquerading
  • Advanced Message Sorting
I dare say that's a hefty bundle of features right there.
