BillShrink - Website helps, yes, shrink your expenses

You'd almost think the name means they'll reduce the physical dimensions of your cash, but no, it's the expenses it'll cut down. Everyone these days is trying to save money, blah blah blah. So find savings on almost everything in one place. From the website:

"It's as simple as asking yourself, why overspend? Given the vast number of complex offers and plans, such as those from the major mobile carriers and credit card issuers, chances are pretty good you're paying more than you need to.

We make it simple to compare what you've got to what they're offering. And if you're like most people, that means significant savings. Isn't that just how things on the Web should be? Incredibly useful, simple and free."

ReturnMyPants - For those who believe in lending their stuff

My religion includes the very important commandment: Don't lend anybody anything. But even I break it once in a while, so there's this website that helps you keep track of who has what.

"Return My Pants is a free service that tracks stuff you lend out to other people. You can also track things that you borrow."

ShortcutsMan - Manage your desktop and start menu shortcuts

I haven't seen too many of these apps around, not sure why. Seems like a very useful utility. Even though broken shortcuts don't cause a lot of trouble compared to, say, our multi-trillion-dollar national debt, they can be a pain in the ass when they clutter up your system. Here's a great way to keep things clean and neat.

Google fast flip - Power through news articles like flipping though magazines

Fast flip is a great idea from Google. Search for news articles on any topic, just like a regular Google search, and see news articles laid out magazine style. Click on any one article to bring it up, or click on the arrow head to move to the next screen-full of articles.

GoodSync - A powerhouse of file syncing and backup

In the pantheon of syncing and backup gods, GoodSync lives among the clouds with the best. I love it for how it plays so well with RoboForm, its close cousin developed by the same company, Siber Systems. I use it primarily to keep my logon info synced between computers, and it does this easily and efficiently, but it can do so much more: It syncs all kinds of files, photos, emails, etc. between various devices and performs backups of same.

GoodSync has a free and a paid version, Pro2. The paid version adds unlimited jobs and file syncing.

TrashMail.net - Disposable email addresses Firefox Add-on

You have to love any app with the word "trash" in the name. This add-on for Firefox produces email addressed meant to be used once and then trashed, hence the nifty moniker. When would you need it? Many websites and forums require an email address to be entered on a form in order to register, but giving out your real email address like an old lady scattering breadcrumbs to pigeons in the park can bite you on the behind later on in the form of an avalanche of spam. From the website:

"Create free disposable email addresses and paste them directly in forms. This helps to protect you from spam mails and could be useful when subscribing to forums or newsletters..."

Google Earth - Upgrade to 5.1 and see significant speed improvement

Remember atlases? Remember when you couldn't zoom in to see your (or someone else's) house? Ah, what fools we were. Google Earth has made some big gains is speed and other aspects of its uniquely game-changing application. From the blog:

"What does all of this mean to you? A faster, smoother experience when you're flying around the globe. Download the latest version (Google Earth 5.1), head on over to Paris, and turn on the road layer without fear of slowing things down. Or turn on one of the Rumsey Map layers from our gallery and see the world as it was drawn by Cassini in 1790 without missing a beat."

FlashcardExchange - Create and share your own flashcards for study

No one likes to think about studying. Well, some people do, but we won't get into that. The fact is, a learning brain is a healthy brain, and many of us need to study, and scientific studies have proven that flashcards are a good way to learn stuff. This site lets you create, print, share and use flashcards to actually study.

Grooveshark - A great place to listen to free music

I've long been a fan of Pandora's free music service. Grooveshark is also a free music service, but it meets a different need and does it differently. Pandora starts you off by letting your set up a station based on a specific song or artist, then plays songs that it judges to be similar. You can tweak the playlist by telling them which songs you like and which you think suck; you can fast forward to the next song, but you can't go back or replay one you like.

But Grooveshark lets you find specific songs by specific artists, make playlists, and play them whenever you like. There's a lot more to it than this, but I'll leave that for you to discover.

Copy Path Shell Extension - Copy full path of files to your clipboard

There are quite a few occasions when I need to send someone the path to a file, usually at work. When the file is kept on a server and someone asks me how to find it, for instance. Even at home, if I need to remember where a file is located in my local directory, I may want to copy the path to a note somewhere. Rather than click on Properties and find, highlight and copy the path, this application adds the option to copy it to your clipboard by right-clicking the file itself. Very handy indeed.

Browser Chooser - Lets you choose which browser to open links in

I don't get how anyone can use one browser exclusively. Loyalty and all that, sure, but some browsers are better suited to specific websites and tasks than are others. This Windows app gives you a bit more control and flexibility when choosing which browser is best for any particular link. From the website:

"Browser Chooser is a small tool acting as the default browser allowing you to choose what browser to open the link in. It gives you the flexibility to choose what browser to use for any given task. It is developed in VB.Net and geared towards Windows Vista and Windows 7."
