Gridy - Organize the open windows on your desktop

This app sets up an invisible grid upon which you can organize your open windows. From the website:

"Gridy adds an invisible grid to Windows, so that any window you move or resize is snapped to it. Snapping is enabled with mouse drag or keyboard arrow keys. In addition, you can: Make any window semi-transparent, hide the window's Alt-Tab icon and set any window to be Always on Top."

SortPlaces Firefox Add-On - Does an automatic sort of your bookmarks

Every time you add a bookmark in Firefox, the new bookmark is placed at the end of whichever folder you place it within. I like to have my bookmarks sorted alphabetically by name to they're easy to find. This add-on will sort your bookmarks automatically! Very nice.

SuperF4 - A shortcut to killing hung apps

If you use Windows, you know what it's like to have an application hang, get stuck, mired down with whatever process it's trying, and failing, to complete. You have to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del, open the Task Manager, find the process, click "End Process," then tell Windows you really do want to kill it. Who has the time?

With SuperF4, when you have the offending window in the foreground, press Ctrl+Alt+F4 and that mother will be shut down, no questions asked.

Enigma - An endlessly entertaining puzzle game

I don't usually post about computer games. That's because I'm not a huge computer-game fan. This one, however, seems to be a simple, yet profound mental teaser with endless levels of skill to climb. From the website:

"Enigma is a puzzle game inspired by Oxyd on the Atari ST and Rock'n'Roll on the Amiga. The object of the game is to find uncover pairs of identically colored Oxyd stones. Simple? Yes. Easy? Certainly not! Hidden traps, vast mazes, laser beams, and, most of all, countless hairy puzzles usually block your direct way to the Oxyd stones."

You can easily overload your Firefox installation with too many add-ons, so you have to be selective. This one is for sure worth checking out. From the website:

iCyte - Makes researching the Web simple

Doing research on the Web can be difficult when the ephemeral nature of the beast comes to the fore. The Web is ever-changing, so providing simple links doesn't guarantee you'll get the same results the next time you follow them. This is where an Internet tool like this one comes in handy.

When installed as a browser add-on, a simple right-click on any web page gives you the option to "cyte" it, saving a snapshot of the page to your iCyte account either as a new project or an existing one.

Watch the video to see how it works...

No need to feel guilty about it. We all have secrets, or at least information that should be kept out of the hands of evildoers. For those files, you can't ask for a simpler means of hiding and/or locking them than this app. From the website:

MyAlgebra - A free help site for algebra homework

There probably aren't many parents who can help their kids with algebra homework. My kids grew up with a mom who is a math teacher, so they lucked out there. It's not that we're not smart. It's more that we've forgotten everything we haven't had to use since middle school.

For us there's the excellent website. So now when your kids are stumped by algebra homework, you really can help. Don't you feel better already?

RightThumb - The easiest way to create thumbnail images

Any web-traveler knows about thumbnails. Those small images that give you the idea, though not the full-sized image. If a picture is worth 1,000 words, a thumbnail image must be worth at least 200. Using thumbnails saves tons of room on a website's pages and gives the user the option to click for the full-sized graphic.

But creating thumbnails can be a chore. This little executable app makes it as simple as it could possibly be. Once your started the app and set up your size and other preferences, simply right-click on any selected pics and you'll see the context-menu option to "Create thumbnail(s)."

Sonic PDF Creator - Makes PDFs from any Windows app

As an alternative to the gigantic Adobe Acrobat, this svelte application can make you a PDF-creating pro for, as Checkers likes to say, little coin. Besides creating PDF documents from any Windows program (via its virtual printer engine), you can manipulate PDF documents in all kinds of useful ways. (I just turned a huge PDF user's manual into a neat little booklet.) From the website:

Join the Torrent World - uTorrent and TorrentFetcher

As an experienced computer user it's not easy to admit that I'm this late to the world of torrent downloads. But, OK, I'm getting upt to speed and I've discovered two excellent tools that'll let me find and download some serious movies, software and TV shows. And more.

First the torrent client that downloads that content. uTorrent is damn good at this and plants a very small footprint on your system.

Second, a fine way to make sense of the chaotic process of actually finding that content: TorrentFetcher.

SpiderOak - Another free (2Gb) online backup/storage solution

Does backup intimidate you? There's no need for that with applications like this one. With online backup there's no need to decide where you're going to backup to. And this app allows you not only to use it for backup, but also for synchronization, sharing, remote access, and storage. From the site:

"Whether you need to access a document you have stored on a remote server, synchronize data between a Mac, Windows or Linux device, share important business documents with your clients, or just rest easy knowing all of your data is safely, securely, and automatically backed up - SpiderOak's free online backup, online sync and online sharing solution can handle all your needs!

SpiderOak offers a different approach to online backup by combining a suite of services into one consolidated tool - free online backup, synchronization, sharing, remote access, and storage. This difference is further measured in our zero-knowledge privacy policy - the first one ever employed in this setting. Our flexible design allows you to handle data from any operating system (Mac, Windows and Linux) or location (external drives, network volumes, USB keys, etc...) using just one centralized account."
