If you happen to be in love with the latest and greatest anything, you will definitely want to be the first kid on your block to have Windows Seven wallpaper on your desktop screen. Formerly codenamed Blackcomb, then Vienna, Windows Se7en is supposed to be the name of the next version of Windows, due out in 2009 or 2010. Whether or not it has anything like the look of this wallpaper, the look is quite stunning.

Upgrade to OpenOffice 2.3

OpenOffice 2.3

For those of you who are unfamiliar with OpenOffice, you should know that it is an open source (read free!) alternative to the pricey Microsoft Office. If you are hesitant to plunk down big bucks for multiple installations of MS Office, OpenOffice might be your solution.

If you're already a fan of OpenOffice, version 2.3 is now available, even though the official release comes tomorrow. Lots of bug fixes and feature updates are included in the new version.

Remote Desktop Control Solution: Yuuguu

Yuuguu Remote Desktop Control

As a self-proclaimed computer guru, I am often called upon to assist a friend or customer by telephone with their computer malfunction issues. Anyone who has tried to help someone with a computer problem over the phone is painfully aware of how difficult this can be when the recipient of your help cannot describe what he or she is seeing or doing. This is where a remote desktop control solution comes in handy.

When you can not only see for yourself what's on the person's screen, but take control of their machine from the comfort and convenience of your own desk, well, that's a little slice of heaven right there, isn't it? So check out this free beta offering and help or be helped.

Take Opera 9.5 Alpha Out for a Spin

Opera 9.5 Alpha

Opera seems to be one of the most underused browsers available today, and that is unfortunate because it happens to be an excellent and innovative product with some very cool features. If you want to try it out, check out the new, publicly available, 9.5 alpha release. It adds features like full history search, status bar with zoom and image control, restore closed widows, improved bitTorrent performance, skins and more.

Get Ready for Windows Live Unified Installer!

Sounds like what physicists are searching for, the grand unified theory (GUT), but Windows plans to launch this week "free software that connects its Windows operating system to software services delivered on the Internet, a practice increasingly referred to as “cloud” computing. The initiative is part of an effort to connect Windows more seamlessly to a growing array of Internet services," according to the NYT.

Bringing you closer to its Windows Live online offerings, like Search, SkyDrive, Mail, Photo Gallery, Messenger, OneCare and Messenger, this software promises to make connecting with its services easier than ever before. A good idea? Sounds like it to me. Keep your eyes peeled.

A Sweet Suite of Online Services: webAsyst

webAsyst

There is an overabundance of online applications available, God knows, but this one stands out for sure. It is beautifully laid out in prime Web 2.0 fashion, it is cleanly set up and works well. I do not sign up for every tom-dick-and-harry suite out there, but I signed up for this one. If you want a nice set of apps that will increase your online productivity, regardless of your real job, this could be the one you need.

Snag Links with Snap Links Firefox Extension

Snap Links

Lasso your links to open them all at once with Snap Links. Snap Links is a Firefox extension that lets you select multiple links by right-clicking and dragging across the links you want to open. A green box appears around them. Once you release the right mouse button the links will open in separate tabs. Neat, huh?
